げい【芸】

〔(歌舞音曲の)技能〕 an accomplishment; an artistic skill [proficiency, ability]; 〔演技〕 (a) performance; 〔曲芸･見世物〕 a skillful feat; a stunt; a trick; 〔習得した技術〕 a skill.

●多芸多趣味の人 a person of many accomplishments and interests

・祖母には諸芸一般の心得があった. My grandmother had a general familiarity with all the (usual) accomplishments.

●芸が身を助けるほどの不仕合わせ. Falling so low that one must fall back on an acquired skill.

●芸で身を立てる use one's artistic talent [an acquired skill] to make a living.

芸がない 〔芸事を身につけていない〕 have no skill; be without skill; 〔工夫が足りない〕 lack sufficient artfulness (to be interesting); be uninteresting [boring].

●父は仕事一筋, 何の芸もない人でした. For my father, his job was everything; he had no special interests.

・ただ集まって酒を飲むというのも芸がない. 何か趣向を考えよう. Just to get together and drink is boring; let's think of something with some pizzazz.

芸は一生 Mastering a skill is a lifelong pursuit.
